Model Legislation for school choice

The Education Task Force of ALEC (the American Legislative Exchange Council) has approved several school choice model bills. ALEC sends these bills to thousands of legislators across the country for their consideration as they begin their new legislative sessions. These bills are the result of the efforts of the Alliance for School Choice and the Milton & Rose D. Friedman Foundation, as well as legislators and policy experts from around the country.

 Parental Choice Scholarship Program Act

Means-tested Eligibility -- Sliding-scale Scholarship Amounts

Summary: This bill creates a scholarship program for children from low- and middle-income families to attend the public or private elementary or secondary school of their parents’ choice.

 Great Schools Tax Credit Program Act

Scholarship Tax Credits

Summary: This legislation authorizes a tax credit for individual and corporate contributions to organizations that provide educational scholarships to eligible students so they can attend qualified public and private schools of their parents’ choice.

 The Special Needs Scholarship Program Act

Summary: The Special Needs Scholarship Program provides special needs students with the option to attend the public or private school of their parents’ choice.

Summary: The Autism Scholarship Program provides students with autism the option to attend the public or private school of their parents’ choice.

 The Foster Child Scholarship Program Act

Summary: The Foster Child Scholarship Program provides children who have been placed in foster care the option to attend a public or private school of their guardians’ choice.

 The Smart Start Scholarship Program
